SUMMER SCHOOL
The Rapides Parish School Board may offer a summer school program for students at the elementary and secondary levels, and shall offer school remediation and retest opportunities as outlined in Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) Bulletin 1566, Pupil Progression Policies and Procedures.
Elementary summer schools may offer programs to enable students not meeting the promotion criteria during the regular school year to attend a summer school to remove deficiencies and be considered for promotion to the next grade or to provide additional learning opportunities. Students attending summer school for promotional purposes shall have written consent by the principal of the last school they attended.
Students not passing the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) exam administered in the spring of each year in grades 4 and 8, are highly recommended to attend a summer school remediation program for remediation in the specific area needed and may be retested at the conclusion of the course. Summer remediation shall consist of a minimum of fifty (50) hours of instruction per subject.
Secondary schools may offer summer school to enable students to schedule courses to enrich their experiences, to take new subjects, and to enable students who have failed in subjects to remove deficiencies. The administration of the summer school shall have the written permission from the principal of the students’ home school in order for high school credit to be awarded.
All students with disabilities should receive services along with regular education students in summer programs, with special supports provided as needed.
Students attending summer school session may be charged a fee. Fees shall be set by the School Board upon recommendation of the Superintendent and his/her administrative staff.
SUMMER SCHOOL REGULATIONS
Schools which offer summer school shall do so to enable students to schedule courses which tend to enrich their experiences, to take new subjects, and to enable students who have failed in subjects to remove deficiencies.
Summer school shall be conducted in an approved school building and shall have a certified principal.
The summer school administration shall have a written recommendation from the principal of the student's home school for the student to attend summer school if high school credit is to be awarded, or if an elementary student is to be promoted. Principals may make administrative policies necessary for smoother school operation and student control.
Application
Any summer school operated for the purpose of awarding high school credits or for promotional purposes at the elementary level shall apply to the Louisiana Department of Education for an approval classification.
Summer schools having elementary grades in conjunction with secondary grades shall follow the secondary standards.
Faculty
Certification of the faculty shall be equal to that required during the regular session. Teaching load and class size shall not exceed that of the regular session. No teacher shall teach or supervise study more than six (6) clock hours daily.
Instruction
No teacher shall be allowed to teach more than one subject during one period of time. Students taking subjects for the first time and subjects for enrichment shall be placed in separate sections from repeaters in a given course for instruction.
Library, laboratory, and audiovisual aids shall be available in the facilities used for summer school. Textbooks, supplementary materials, and supplies adequate for effective instruction shall be provided.
Course Offerings
High schools may offer those courses outlined in the program of studies in Bulletin 741, Louisiana Handbook for School Administrators. Credit may be earned for courses taken to remove deficiencies or for courses taken for the first time. However, only one course may be taken per discipline.
Testing
LEAP 21 Remediation Summer School:
Students will be required to pass the LEAP 21 retest to be considered for promotion to the next grade level.
Removal of Course Deficiency or Credit for a New Course:
All students, elementary and high school, shall successfully complete the course requirements.
