ALEXANDRIA YOUTH ORCHESTRA

JOHN DE CHIARO, DIRECTOR

The Alexandria Youth Orchestra, founded in 2009 and under the direction of John De Chiaro, is a music ensemble comprised of over 55 string students from throughout Rapides Parish ranging from 6th through 12th grades.

In May of 2012, the orchestra competed in the “Big Apple” National Orchestra Competition in New York and won first place honors. This distinction led to an opportunity to audition for a concert in the Youth Orchestra Series at Carnegie Hall. A video recording of our performance in the “Big Apple” competition was submitted to the selection committee at Carnegie Hall and the orchestra was accepted in this series. Their performance date has been scheduled for Sunday, December 1, 2013 at 7:30 P.M.

In March of 2013, the orchestra competed in the “Crescent City” National Orchestra Competition in New Orleans and won first place honors in that festival as well. The orchestra performed the National Anthem at “The Hornets” NBA basketball game on Sunday, March 31, 2013 in New Orleans and have been invited back to perform in “The Hornets” season next year.

The orchestra has received a substantial grant from the Roy O Martin Foundation which was used to fund the Carnegie Hall concert. Grants from the Union Tank Car Company and the Junior League of Alexandria have also been awarded to assist with this prestigious performance.
